  • Overview

     

    Conduct water, wastewater, fuel, breathable air and liquid and gaseous commodities analysis at NASA"s Wallops Flight Facility, an analytical laboratory accredited by Virginia Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program and American Industrial Hygiene Association Laboratory Accreditation Program. 

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Other duties may include sampling, research, and preparation of written documents to comply with any  and all environmental regulations or permits.
    • Occasional weekend and holiday work is required.
    •  conducts chemical and physical laboratory tests and performs detailed analyses on solid materials, liquids, and gasses for purposes, such as research, development of new products and materials, new processing methods, quality control, maintenance of  health and safety standards, and others involving  theoretical and practical application of chemical and related sciences.
    • Uses all types of chemical laboratory apparatus including using Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectometer, Inductively Coupled Plasma Analyzer, Karl Fisher Titrator, and Parr Bomb Calorimeter and techniques to test for strength, purity, stability, and chemical content.
    • Writes and edits various documents such as specifications, manuals, reports, plans, training materials, and presentations.  Prepares, catalogues, and maintains files and records.
    • Other environmental work as assigned.

    Qualifications

    x

    • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biology, Physics, Geology, or Engineering.
      • Twelve (12) to twenty-four (24) college semester credit hours in Chemistry
      • Four (4) college semester credit hours (16 hours preferred)  in Microbiology and Biology

    Additional Skills:

    1. Excellent oral and written communication skills
    2. Expertise with Microsoft Office products and Laboratory Information 3. Management Systems (LIMS)
    4. Experience operating Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry, Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy equipment
